WebFOCUS Visual Discovery Workbench AE Toolbars

In this section:

WebFOCUS Visual Discovery Workbench AE comes with a number of toolbars, some which may not be displayed. To choose which toolbars to display, use the Toolbars item in the View menu in the menu bar. Or, right click over the toolbar area of the application window to get a list of available toolbars and to choose which are displayed. You can also create your own, custom toolbar using Customize in the Toolbars menu.

If you build new toolbars, they are saved when you exit WebFOCUS Visual Discovery AE and automatically displayed when you open WebFOCUS Visual Discovery AE.

If you do not want to display this configuration, hold the Shift key when the initial WebFOCUS Visual Discovery AE screen displays. Continue to hold the Welcome screen is displayed. The default configuration (set by WebFOCUS Visual Discovery AE) is loaded.

Key Dashboard Toolbar Controls

Toolbars

The WebFOCUS Visual Discovery Workbench AE comes with a number of toolbars, some which may not be displayed. To choose which toolbars to display, use the Toolbars item in the View menu in the menu bar. Or, right click over the toolbar area of the application window to get a list of available toolbars and to choose which are displayed. You can also create your own, custom toolbar. Right-click over the toolbar area at the top of the WebFOCUS Visual Discovery Workbench AE window and choose Customize.

Selection Toolbar

When you click on a toolbar button, an action is executed. The following table lists each toolbar button and describes its function.

Toolbar Button

Description

Select All. Highlight all data that is not excluded. Data is excluded using the "Exclude ..." buttons.

Unselect All. Unhighlight all data currently displayed.

Toggle Selection. Reverse current selection state: change selected items to unselected, unselected to selected. Excluded data remains excluded.

Exclude Selected. Remove currently selected elements from charts. These items are logically removed and will not show in any of the charts until they are restored. They are also removed from any predictive analytics/modeling. See also "Excluded Unselected".

Restore Excluded. Restore and display all excluded elements. The state of other visible items is unchanged.

Undo. Remove the previous action.

Redo. Return to the state reversed by a previous use of "Undo".

Selection Mode Toolbar

Selection mode controls how the mouse interacts with data when you sweep over or click on a chart. Controls on the Selection Mode Toolbar are:

Toolbar Button

Description

Rectangular Selector. This is the default setting. To use the rectangular selector, place the cursor in the area to be captured and drag the mouse while holding down the left mouse button. A rectangular selection box appears around the data that you have selected.

Circular Selector. To use the circular selector, place the cursor in the area to be captured and drag the mouse while holding down the left mouse button. A circular selection area appears around the data that you have selected.

Lasso Selector. Use this tool to select data by creating freehand selection borders around the data.

Replace Selection Mode. This is the default setting. The data that you select using this tool replaces previously-selected data.

Add Selection Mode. Use this function to add data to an existing selection.

Subtract Selection Mode. Use this function to remove data from an existing selection.

Intersect Selection Mode. Use this function to select the “intersection” of two fields. This is essentially an “and” function.

Animate Toolbar

The Animate Toolbar contains the following options:

Selection Button

Description

Start/Pause Animation. Starts animation or pauses animation that is currently active.

Stop Animation. Stops the animation that is currently active.

Previous Selection. Displays the previous data element in the chart.

Next Selection. Displays the next data element in the chart.

Increase Animation Speed. Accelerates animation speed.

Decrease Animation Speed. Slows animation speed.

Chart Toolbar

The Chart Toolbar is displayed in the Page tab. When you click on a toolbar button, an action is executed.

The following table lists each toolbar button and describes its function.

Selection Button

Description

New Text Filter. A text filter is a control that allows data for particular categories to be excluded. See Text Filter for more information.

New Data Sheet. A data sheet shows the detail of data in a table as a data grid. See Data Sheet for more information.

New Summary Sheet. A summary sheet can be used to examine rolled-up or aggregated data for several measures tables based on a particular categorical dimension. See Summary Sheet for more information.

New Counts. A Counts displays the details of data in a table as a data grid. It provides numeric summaries of both overall and selected data. See Counts for more information.

New Pie Chart. A pie chart shows weighted categories as pie slices. See Pie Chart to learn more about this function.

New Bar Chart. Weighted categories are represented in a bar chart as bars. Each bar represents a unique value. See Bar Chart for more information.

New Line Chart. A line chart shows the sequence of categorical items connected by a line (these items can be weighted). Like charts make sense for a series of values that are connected in some sense. See Line Chart for more information about this feature.

New Histogram. A histogram displays the distribution of a continuous field. See Histogram for more information.

New Scatterplot. A scatterplot shows the interaction of two fields. These fields may be continuous (a number) or categorical (a name). See Scatter Plot for more information.

New Multiscape. A multiscape shows the interaction of two continuous fields. See Multiscape for more information.

New Parabox. A parabox is useful for understanding how a subset compares to the entire population across a series of fields. See Parabox for more information.

New Data Constellations. A data constellation is a graph, a collection of things that are related. It can be used to show links and relationships. See Data Constellation for additional information about this function.

New Time Table. A time table is a scatterplot that shows events over time. The X axis shows a continuous variable (often time), while the Y axis shows a categorical variable which may have one or more characteristics. See Time Table for additional information.

New Heat Map. A heat map displays categorical dimensions by a combination of size (for example, volume of stock trading) and perceived value (whether the stock gained or lost value). See Heat Map for more information about this chart type.

New Map. Use this function to create a map which can be used to examine data displayed geographically (like airline flight numbers by city) and looking for possible relationships between the geographical entities (like flight delays between cities). See Map for more information.

Color Toolbar

The Color Toolbar contains the following options:

Selection Button

Description

Color Scale

Use this pulldown list to select a color scale. A Color Scale is a range of colors that can be applied to a variable. For more information, see Use Color Scale.

Color By

Color is mapped to a data field by taking colors from a color scale based on the field type. For example, for categorical data, the data is ordered and colors taken from the scale; for continuous data, the range of data is found and the colors from the color scale mapped across the data range. Use this pulldown list to select a data field from which to base the color scale. See Use Color By for more information.

Data Toolbar

When you click on a toolbar button, an action is executed.

The following table lists each toolbar button and describes its function.

Selection Button

Description

New Data Source. Displays the Data Wizard. Use this wizard to load text, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets, Microsoft Access database, relational databases, or Microsoft Analysis Services data. See Load Data Using the Data Wizard for more information.

Load Previous Data Source. Displays the Load Previous Data Sources dialog box. This dialog box contains data sources that have been previously loaded using the Data Wizard and which were designated as Remember Data Source Definition items in the wizard. Choose a data source by clicking the checkbox next to the appropriate selection. Click Open.

Refresh Data. Reloads the data source in its current state. This function allows you to access the most-up-to-date data source without having to exit WebFOCUS Visual Discovery AE and reload the data.

Page Toolbar

The Page Toolbar contains the following options:

Toolbar Item

Description

Select Chart Colors. Displays the Chart Colors dialog box. Use this function to override the default color scheme for such elements as background, foreground, etc. It also controls whether charts are shaded using the Shade Chart Elements? check box. The shading option only affects the current project.

Select Chart Fonts. Displays the Chart Fonts dialog box. In this dialog box, you can change the font, font weight, color and font point size for the chart title, axis title, and chart label elements. See Change Chart Fonts for more information.

Selection Table

Use this pulldown list to select the table that the Selection Toolbar functions operate on for the current page. This table will be saved and restored each time this page is viewed.

Color Table

Use this pulldown list to select the table that the Color Toolbar functions operate on for the current page. This table will be saved and restored each time this page is viewed.

Project Toolbar

When you click on a toolbar button, an action is executed.

The following table lists each toolbar button and describes its function.

Selection Button

Description

Create a New Project. Displays a Page tab in the workspace. A page displays a combination of multiple charts.

Open an Existing Project. Displays a list of existing projects from which to select.

To open an existing project:

  1. Select the project from the list displayed or click the Browse button to locate the project.
  2. When you have located your project, click Op-en. The project’s page is displayed in the workspace.

Save Project. Saves the project that is currently active.

To save a project:

  1. In the Save Project dialog box that displays, enter the project name or choose from projects displayed.
  2. Click OK.

Export Pages. Displays the Export Pages dialog box. Use this box to designate the format in which the presentation will be exported (.html, .mht, .pdf, .doc., or .ppt). See Export Pages for step-by-step instructions.

Full Screen. Displays the page so that it overlays all menus, toolbars and panes. See Select or Exit Full Screen Mode.

Selection Mode Toolbar

Intersect Selection Mode. Use this function to select the intersection of two fields. This is essentially an and function.

Exclude Unselected. Removes unselected elements from the data view. These items are logically removed and will not show in any of the charts until they are restored.

Restore Excluded. Restores and redisplays all excluded elements. Prior selection state is not changed.

Select All. Use this function to select all data that is not excluded.

Toggle Selection. Use this function to switch between selected and unselected data.

Undo. This function allows you to remove a single action (by selecting this function once) or several actions (by repeatedly selecting this function).

Note: This function may be slow or inoperative with large data sets, depending on computer memory.

Redo. This function allows you to re-institute a single action (by selecting the function once) or several actions (by repeatedly selecting this function).

Text Filter Toolbar

The Text Filter toolbar is located at the bottom of the chart. If it is not displayed, click the in the chart. The toolbar contains the following functions:

Selection Button

Description

Data Configuration. Displays the Data Configuration window.

  1. If more than one table was loaded using the Data Wizard, use the pulldown list to select the applicable table. If a single table was loaded, it is the default.
  2. Use the pulldown lists to select Field.
  3. Click OK. The Text Filter displays categories from the table/field.

Edit Chart Titles. Use this function to change the content and font style of labels displayed in an active view.

In this dialog box, you can:

  • Choose to display the Chart title text by placing a checkmark in the Display Title box.
  • Add/edit the content of the Title, as well as change the font type, font style, font color, and point size of the Title text.
  • Add/edit the content of Axis text, as well as change the font type, font style, font color, and point size of the Axis text.
  • Change the font type, font style, font color, and point size of the Label text.

Click OK to save your changes and close the dialog box.

View Chart Help. Displays the Help View for the chart.

View Toolbar

When you click on a toolbar button, an action is executed.

The following table lists each toolbar button and describes its function.

Selection Button

Description

Navigation Pane. Toggles the display of the Navigation Pane, located on the left side of the screen. The Navigation Pane displays page-specific content that you can author to help users analyze data. See Navigation Pane for more information.

Task View. Toggles the display of the Task View located on the left side of the screen. The Task view lists the steps to be performed in order to successfully load, display, and analyze data, and share your results. See Using the Task View for more information.

Project Workshop View. Toggles the display of the Project Workshop tab in the workspace area of the screen. See Project Workshop for information about this function.

New Page. Inserts a blank page into the workspace.

Template Library View. Located on the left side of the screen, the template library contains the elements (data sources, color scales and schemes, and page layouts) that are currently available to select from your project. See Using the Template Library View for more information.

Property Explorer View. Located on the right side of the screen, the Property Explorer displays property information for the current data displayed in the active Page tab. Information can be sorted by category or alphabetically by name. See Property Explorer for more information.

Color Legend View. Displays the Color Legend located at the bottom right side of the screen. See Color and Selection Legend for more information.

Help View. Located on the right side of the screen, the Help View displays how-to and other help-related information.
