Remote Server Setup At a Glance
Although the DataMigrator Server is typically installed
on the same platform as the target data for DM applications, there
is no such restriction for source data. In fact, the DataMigrator
Server frequently resides on one platform while the source data resides
on one or more platforms that are remote from the DataMigrator Server
itself. In these situations, you must configure the remote servers
(also called subservers) to make the data accessible to the DataMigrator
Server for processing. For an illustration
of this setup, see the second diagram under DataMigrator Server.
First, complete the basic DataMigrator Server configuration steps
described in DataMigrator Setup At a Glance. After completing these steps, you are
ready to start the setup for one or more remote servers.
To set up the remote server, complete these steps:
- Configure remote
servers for data sources and create metadata.
- Return to the
DataMigrator Server and configure it to access the remote servers
so that you can use the data residing there.
The following steps describe this process:
- Install (if
necessary) the remote server on the platform required by your site. (In
many situations, the remote server may have already been installed.)
- Start the DMC
by selecting iWay Software and then iWay
77 DM Client from the Windows Start menu. For Windows servers,
the DMC is under iWay Software, iWay
77 DataMigrator Server.
- Configure one
or more nodes for the remote server in the DMC configuration file.
This
step identifies the name and port of the remote server you will
be connecting to and adds the server name(s) to the DMC server list.
See How to Add a Node to Identify the Server to the Data Management Console.
- Connect to
and test the remote server from the DMC. You can test that the server is
started and able to perform basic data retrieval (against sample
data). See How to Test the Server. You can also test the server from the Home page of
the Web Console.
- Configure and
test the data adapter(s) for the data source(s) you will be using
from the DMC. The test verifies that the configuration was successful
and you can access the data adapter.
- Create and
test the metadata for the data source(s) you will be using from
the DMC. The test verifies data retrieval functionality for the
specific data sources you are using. You can also create and test
the metadata from the Managing Metadata page of the remote servers
Web Console.
Note: If you are using more than one data
source for the same adapter, repeat Step 6 as many times
as necessary before going to Step 7. If, however, you have data
sources in a variety of adapters, repeat Step 5 and Step 6, then
proceed to Step 7.
- Connect the
DataMigrator Server to the remote servers. Once you have installed and
configured the remote servers, with their data sources, you must
establish a connection from the DataMigrator Server to the remote
servers so that DataMigrator will be able to access the data that
resides on those servers. To do this, you return to the DataMigrator
Servers Web Console Home page and select Remote Servers from
the navigation pane. To add the connection to the remote server(s),
you click Add in the navigation pane.
- Create metadata
to mirror the metadata on the remote server(s)
from the DataMigrator Servers Web Console Remote Servers page. (Note
that for remote servers you create metadata from the Remote Servers page
rather than from the Metadata page that you used for the DataMigrator
Server.)
This step makes the data on the remote server accessible
to the DataMigrator Server.
For detailed information about the Web Console pages used to
set up DataMigrator for remote data access, see the Server
Administration for UNIX, Windows, OpenVMS, IBMÂ i, and z/OS manual.
