DataMigrator Setup At a Glance

The two principal components of DataMigrator are the iWay DataMigrator Server, which includes the Web Console, and the Data Management Console.

  1. Install the DataMigrator Server on the platform that will contain your target data (this is the platform you will be moving data to).

DataMigrator Server is typically installed on the platform where your data target (a data warehouse, data mart, or another type of target) will reside. Your first task is determining that location. The following list of tasks assumes that your source data resides on that same platform.

Note: At many sites, source data is on a different platform from the one on which the DataMigrator Server is installed. If this is the case at your site, you need to install, configure, and test one or more remote servers, using the process described in Remote Server Setup At a Glance.

  2. For Windows servers, the DMC is installed with the server. For non-Windows servers, you need to install the DMC separately. See How to Install the Data Management Console.

The DMC can be installed on each Windows computer that will be used to build flows or on a shared network drive.

  3. Start the DataMigrator Server.
  4. Start the DMC by selecting iWay Software and then iWay 77 DM Client from the Windows Start menu. For Windows servers, the DMC is under iWay Software, iWay 77 DataMigrator Server.
  5. Configure one or more nodes in the DMC configuration file.

This step identifies the name and port of the DataMigrator Server you will be connecting to and adds the server name(s) to the DMC server list. See How to Add a Node to Identify the Server to the Data Management Console.

Tip: If, during the installation of the DMC, you configured it to access the DataMigrator Server, this step is optional. When installing a Windows server, a default LOOPBACK node is configured. This node should not be deleted.

  6. Connect to and test the DataMigrator Server from the DMC. You can test that the server is started and able to perform basic data retrieval (against sample data). See How to Test the Server. You can also test the server from the Home page of the Web Console.
  7. Configure and test data adapters for the source data you will be using from the DMC Adapters folder. The test verifies that the configuration was successful and you can access the data adapter.

Note: If all of your source data is stored on remote servers, omit this step and Step 8 and proceed to Step 9.

  8. Create and test the metadata for the source data from the DMC. The test verifies data retrieval functionality for the specific data sources you are using. You can also create and test the metadata from the Applications page of the Web Console.

Note: If you are using more than one data source for the same adapter, repeat Step 8 as many times as necessary before going to Step 9. If, however, you have data sources in a variety of adapters, repeat Step 7 and Step 8, then proceed to Step 9.

  9. Configure and test the data adapter for the data target from the DMC. You can also configure and test adapters from the Adapters folder of the Web Console.

This step is necessary if the data target is of a different database type than the data source(s) or if all of your data is on remote servers. After completing this step, proceed to Step 10.

Note: If you have more that one data adapter for your data targets, repeat Step 9 as many times as necessary.

Step 9 is not necessary if the data target(s) and data source(s) are of the same database type. Proceed from Step 8 to Step 10.

  10. Create and test the metadata for one or more data targets from the DMC. You can also create and test the metadata from the Applications page of the Web Console.

Note: This step assumes that you are moving data to existing target tables. If you are building new target tables in the DMC, this step is not required.

  11. Open and test three sample flows (dmvpx, dmvpy, and dmvpz), which are provided for this purpose. For each one, run and view the last log to confirm that the DataMigrator Server is configured and properly processing flows. See Testing Sample Data and Process Flows.
  12. Configure server operations, including security, run-time IDs, log and statistics tables. See Performing Server Administration Tasks.

Note: Authorize any users who will be using DataMigrator from the Data Management Console or Web Console. For details, see Authorizing DataMigrator Server Usage and Administration.

  13. Configure the application path and set up additional application directories. See Managing Application Directories and Configuring the Application Path. These procedures can also be performed from the Web Console. For information, see the Server Administration for UNIX, Windows, OpenVMS, IBM i, and z/OS manual or the Web Console online help.
  14. Configure e-mail notification and the scheduler from the DataMigrator Console. See Configuring DataMigrator Server Operations.

For detailed information about the Web Console pages used to set up DataMigrator for local data access, see Performing Server Administration Tasks and the Server Administration for UNIX, Windows, OpenVMS, IBM i, and z/OS manual.
