Layer

Defined as those components that execute a specific function.

Data Layer

Database Server/Servers. This layer supports the processing of SQL queries and data processing.

Reporting and Metadata Layer

WebFOCUS Reporting Server. This layer supports secure access to WebFOCUS, data, and metadata.

Presentation Layer

WebFOCUS Client and ReportCaster. This layer interacts directly with the user through GUI implementations.

Tier

Machine or machines that host either the Data Layer, Reporting and Metadata Layer, or Presentation Layer.

Workload

Overall workload on each machine of each tier.

Query workload

Grouping of report functions and defined as guided ad hoc reporting, batch reporting, and ad hoc reporting.

Guided ad hoc workload

Collection of reports, which may be parameterized, but cannot be updated by a user. It can only be executed as is.

Ad hoc workload

Reports that can be created from the Presentation Layer by power or analytical users.

Batch workload

Reports that are run and distributed in batch mode.

Integrated workload

This is a mix of guided ad hoc, ad hoc, and batch queries that simulate mixed usage patterns.
