A successful WebFOCUS implementation relies heavily on an accurate assessment of the allocation of resources when growing an existing application or when implementing new applications.

Resource sizing is the estimation of resources needed for a new workload or application when usage patterns are unknown. For instance, applications that are not yet in production.

Capacity planning is the estimation of resources for future growth with production workloads where the usage patterns are known. It is important to understand how to size the infrastructure to accommodate that growth so we can maintain performance and Service Level Agreements as usage increases. For example, if the number of active users for a specific WebFOCUS application is expected to grow by 10% in the next year, resource allocation to accommodate that growth is critical. It is important to understand:

• What, if any, infrastructure components need to be expanded for projected growth while maintaining Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and Units of Work (UOW).
• How the infrastructure needs to change, if at all.

To estimate resources for new or existing workloads, the iterative process of tuning and running benchmark tests is a must.
