Advanced Configuration

An option that allows you to configure and customize the aliases and context roots created during the installation process.

alias

A name or description that maps directories containing Developer Studio files to directories that the web server can reference.

Apache Tomcat

A third-party product that you can use as a web and/or application server for Developer Studio local or stand-alone development. A version of Apache Tomcat is packaged with the Developer Studio installation program. You can also install Apache Tomcat separately.

application directory

The directory or folder where sample applications, which are packaged with the product, are installed on your machine. You can change the location of this directory during the installation program.

application server

A server that handles Java processing and serves business logic to application programs.

context root

A configurable file that you can use to access your WebFOCUS configuration, web server, application server, and Help files.

development environment

The environment where you develop WebFOCUS applications. Developer Studio is the desktop development environment product.

full installation

An installation of Developer Studio that does not require you to uninstall a previous version of the product, and will allow you to install multiple versions of the product on your machine.

Graphical (GUI) installation

The default installation mode that launches windows to prompt you for parameters.

installation log file

A file that is generated during the installation program, and provides information about your Developer Studio installation. This file can be referenced if you need to troubleshoot installation issues. If you license Visual Discovery components, a separate installation log file is created.

local web and/or application server

A server configuration that creates a WebFOCUS development environment on the same machine where Developer Studio is installed.

network configuration

A configuration of Developer Studio where the product is installed on a single, shared machine, and is accessed by developers that launch the Developer Studio executable files from their desktops.

port number

The number associated with the machine that is used by the server to process requests.

product installation directory

The directory or folder where the Developer Studio executable files are installed on your machine. You can change the location of this directory during the installation program.

program group

The folder on your Windows machine where the Developer Studio program is installed.

project

A complete reporting application consisting of difference kinds of files that are accessible from the Developer Studio projects area.

project-based development

Development that can be performed against a local or stand-alone configuration of Developer Studio. Project-based development can also be against a remote WebFOCUS environment.

remote development

Connecting to one or more remote servers and modifying existing self-service applications on those servers.

remote web and/or application server

A server configuration that connects to a WebFOCUS development environment on a machine that is elsewhere in your network.

silent installation

The installation mode that launches a text file with installation parameters. During a silent installation, no GUI windows are launched.

thisfoci.bat

A utility installed in the \bin folder of Developer Studio that registers files on your machine.

trace file

A file that tracks the requests processed by the WebFOCUS. You can access trace files through the WebFOCUS Administration Console, the Developer Studio product program group, and the Reporting Server Console.

unique alias

An alias that is given a specific name typically used to distinguish between similar files or folders on your machine.

update installation

An installation of Developer Studio that does not require you to uninstall a previous version of the product. When you perform an update installation, the files associated with your version of Developer Studio will be updated.

web server

A server that handles HTML, images, and other web content and processing.

WebFOCUS Administration Console

The interface that administrators use to manage the WebFOCUS environment and configuration settings.

WebFOCUS Client

A piece of WebFOCUS that runs as a part of your application server and connects WebFOCUS to the web. The WebFOCUS Client receives and processes requests by passing them to the WebFOCUS Reporting Server.

WebFOCUS environment

Complete instances of WebFOCUS that you can access to develop WebFOCUS applications. A WebFOCUS environment consists of a web server, a WebFOCUS Client, and Reporting Servers.

WebFOCUS Reporting Server

A server that resides on machines that access your data. The WebFOCUS reporting server uses WebFOCUS integration technology to provide access to data, number crunching, and report generation functionality.
