Modernization Options

There are several options for modernization. You must make the decision early in the migration planning, which modernization approach suits your needs. It is important to keep in mind the reasons for moving to WebFOCUS Version 8, which for you may be security. If it is for security, the expectation is that you do not want to upgrade to WebFOCUS Version 8 just to have the same security authorization as WebFOCUS Version 7. The expectation is that you want to change what you had in WebFOCUS Version 7 to solve some of the WebFOCUS Version 7 security limitations that existed in that release. Most of the modernization information in this documentation is built on that premise.

To establish the scope of the upgrade (full or phased), there are several options that should be considered to modernizing migrated content. To determine which option is suitable for you, it is important to understand the different modernization options described in the following table.

None

Replicate migrated applications in WebFOCUS Version 8. The user will have the same or similar experience as WebFOCUS Version 7 in that reports and Business Intelligence Dashboards will have the same look and feel.

This option may be appropriate for simpler reports.

The advantage is that minimal training is needed. On the other hand, WebFOCUS Version 8 new features are not leveraged.

Retaining and modernizing migrated domains

Move migrated content around within the migrated domains.

You do not move or copy migrated content to new WebFOCUS Version 8 folders.

This option would require the least amount of migration effort, while still allowing you to take advantage of new WebFOCUS Version 8 security and flexibility in organizing content.

The advantage is that minimal work would be needed to change internal references.

Note: This applies to migrated domain folders only. It does not apply to the two top-level folders, ReportCaster and Library Content.

You will need to understand WebFOCUS Version 8 security and how the Resource Templates work.

Retaining and modernizing migrated domains and security

Move migrated content around within the migrated domains and then apply security to the reorganized domains.

This allows you to leverage both the WebFOCUS Version 8 security and the flexibility of organizing content within the migrated domains.

Redesigning migrated domains and security

Use the Resource Templates to create new WebFOCUS Version 8 folders and security framework. Then, copy the selected content to that new framework.

This option may require the most amount of migration effort if the use of internal references is widespread. The internal references will need to be changed manually.

The advantage is that applications will be designed to fully leverage WebFOCUS Version 8 features, provide more flexibility, and require less maintenance moving forward.
